July 2022 Webinar:
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Elephant Mountain Wildlife Management Area (EMWMA) is dedicated to the restoration and management of wildlife and their habitats in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas. Staff facilitate research and demonstrate management techniques applicable to desert ecosystems. Woody plant encroachment at EMWMA has reduced habitat suitability for many grassland dependent wildlife and increased soil erosion. In partnership with Borderlands Research Institute (BRI), herbicide treatments have been utilized to restore desert grasslands to historic conditions. The BRI shares the goals of “obtaining practical information to benefit land management decisions” related to wildlife ecology, range management & restoration, and conservation biology. By reducing cover of woody plants and increasing herbaceous ground cover managers have improved habitat for wildlife and reduced soil erosion.
