The threats posed by the invasion of non-native plants might seem innumerable. But events like the Bighorn fire, during the summer of 2020, demonstrate how non-native grasses, like Lehmann lovegrass and red brome can provide the fuel that can spread wildfires. Closer to home buffelgrass and fountain grass have invaded our washes and roadsides. These two species can out-compete native species, creating nearly complete monocultures, which have an ability to spread fire throughout the Sonoran desert ecosystem, that has no adaptations to cope with the flames and can lead to loss of habitat needed for many of our native bird species. Tucson Audubon wants you to join us in combating the spread of non-native plants and preserve our native landscape. Tucson Audubon is in a growing number of partnerships, with local HOAs, National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, US Forest Service, Pima County, and the National Forest Foundation, to name a few.
